Posture Problems

A Practical, Movement-Based Approach to Better Posture

After more than 30 years of clinical practice, I have seen posture problems present in many different ways, from persistent pain to reduced performance, stiffness, fatigue and recurring injuries.

Posture issues are rarely just about how someone sits or stands. They are usually the result of how the body moves, adapts and copes with load over time.

At our clinic, we help people understand why posture problems develop and guide them toward long-term improvement through better movement, awareness and rehabilitation.

What I Mean by Posture Problems

Posture problems occur when the body consistently adopts positions or movement patterns that place unnecessary stress on joints, muscles and connective tissue.

These patterns often develop gradually and become normal for the individual, even though they are no longer efficient or supportive of healthy movement.

Common postural patterns I assess include:

  • Forward head and rounded shoulders

  • Loss of spinal control through the mid or lower back

  • Asymmetrical weight-bearing

  • Poor movement coordination during everyday tasks or sport

In many cases, posture issues are reinforced by prolonged sitting, desk-based work, repetitive movements, reduced movement variety and limited body awareness.

How Posture Problems Commonly Present

Not everyone with posture issues experiences constant pain. Many people come to see me because something does not feel right rather than because of sharp or acute symptoms.

Common complaints include:

  • Neck, shoulder or upper back tension

  • Lower back discomfort

  • Headaches

  • Hip or thoracic stiffness

  • Fatigue during daily activities

  • Recurrent strains or injuries

  • Reduced movement efficiency or performance

In performers and runners, posture problems often present as recurring niggles or performance limitations rather than obvious injury.

Posture Is Dynamic, Not a Position to Hold

One of the most common misconceptions I see is the idea that posture should be forced or held in a fixed position.

Posture is dynamic. It changes constantly as we move, breathe and respond to load.

Simply telling someone to stand up straight or prescribing exercises too early can increase tension and reinforce compensation patterns.

At our clinic, posture is assessed through:

  • Static alignment

  • Functional movement patterns

  • Joint mobility and control

  • Breathing mechanics

  • Load management during activity

The goal is not perfect posture. The goal is efficient, adaptable movement that your body can maintain naturally.

How We Help You at Our Clinic

At our clinic, we help you:

  • Identify the underlying causes of posture problems

  • Restore normal movement patterns

  • Reduce unnecessary tension and strain

  • Improve movement awareness

  • Build strength and control once movement has been restored

  • Develop practical strategies you can maintain long term

Treatment may include hands-on care, movement assessment, education and rehabilitation exercises introduced at the appropriate time rather than rushed.

I strongly believe that rehabilitation should follow the return of normal movement patterns, not come before them.

Who Benefits From Posture-Focused Care

Posture-related treatment is particularly helpful for:

  • Office and desk-based workers

  • Dancers and performers

  • Amateur and recreational runners

  • Cyclists and swimmers

  • Active individuals with recurring issues

  • People returning to activity after injury

When Should You Seek Help

You do not need to wait until pain becomes severe.

An assessment may be helpful if you:

  • Feel stiff or restricted most days

  • Experience recurring discomfort in the same areas

  • Notice changes in posture or movement quality

  • Feel fatigued by everyday tasks

  • Want to move more efficiently and prevent injury

Early assessment often leads to better outcomes and more sustainable results.

A Thoughtful, Long-Term Approach

Posture problems develop over time and they require an individual, considered approach rather than a quick fix.

At our clinic, the focus is on helping you move better, feel stronger and regain confidence in your body.
